Tenancy
Tenancy: the district conciliation board
In Aargau, each district has its own conciliation board for tenancy and leases. A dispute over rent, defects or a notice to quit starts before the board of the district where the flat or premises are located – in Baden, for example, the Schlichtungsbehörde für Miete und Pacht des Bezirks Baden. It looks for an agreement; if none is reached, it issues an authorisation to go to court. A lawyer helps with the application and the deadlines, which are often short.

Employment: the employment court at the district court
Each Aargau district court has its own employment court, which decides disputes between employers and employees: contested dismissals, unpaid wages, overtime, references. The competent court is generally the one where the defendant is based or where the work is done. Because many Aargau residents work in Zurich or Basel, a lawyer first checks jurisdiction and the deadlines.

Family: the district court where you live
Separation, divorce, custody and maintenance go first to the district court. Each district has its own: Aarau, Baden, Bremgarten, Brugg, Kulm, Laufenburg, Lenzburg, Muri, Rheinfelden, Zofingen and Zurzach. Jurisdiction generally follows the residence of one of the parties. A family lawyer reviews your options and the prospects of an agreement with you before any proceedings begin.

Criminal
Criminal law: prosecutor and district court
Criminal investigations are led by the Staatsanwaltschaft des Kantons Aargau (public prosecutor), which often closes simple cases with a penalty order. If charges are brought, the district court where the offence was committed tries the case. The deadline for objecting to a penalty order is short, so get advice without delay, whether you are accused or reporting an offence as a victim.

Legal aid
Legal aid: the URP
If you cannot pay for proceedings and your case is not without prospects, you can apply in Aargau for Legal aid (URP). The application goes to the court competent for the case, which at first instance is usually the district court. It can cover court costs and the appointment of a lawyer. A practitioner can tell you whether your situation qualifies.

Your questions in the canton of Aargau
Local answers, checked against official sources. A practitioner can look at your situation in detail.
See all questionsHow do I find a verified lawyer in Aargau?
On ora., every lawyer is checked against a cantonal bar register and every legal adviser holds a Swiss law degree. You filter by area of law, language and place, from Aarau to Zofingen by way of Baden, compare profiles and fees, and book online, at the office or by video.
Which district court covers my municipality?
What counts is the district your municipality belongs to. Wettingen and Spreitenbach, for example, are in the Baden district, Wohlen in the Bremgarten district, Oftringen in the Zofingen district, Möhlin in the Rheinfelden district and Frick in the Laufenburg district. Each district court has its own employment court, and each district its own tenancy conciliation board.
How do I challenge an administrative decision in Aargau?
Decisions by municipalities and cantonal authorities – a building permit, a tax assessment, a ruling by the migration office – can, once the cantonal steps are exhausted, be appealed to the Verwaltungsgericht des Kantons Aargau (administrative court) in Aarau. An objection or an appeal to a cantonal body is often required first. The remedy and deadline are stated at the end of the decision; a lawyer checks the right route.
How much does a lawyer cost in Aargau?
Each practitioner sets their own fee, shown on every profile before you book. ora.’s service fee is a separate line and is never added into the practitioner’s fee. You pay the practitioner directly. If you cannot afford proceedings, legal aid may be available.
What does the Aargauischer Anwaltsverband do?
The Aargauischer Anwaltsverband is the professional association of Aargau lawyers. Membership is not the same as being entered in the cantonal bar register, which is what allows a lawyer to represent clients in court. That register entry is what ora. checks before publishing a lawyer’s profile.
