Before you consult, it helps to know who decides. Here are the competent authorities for the whole canton and the districts they serve, each with its official website.
Tenancy
A dispute over rent, a defect, the deposit or a notice to quit normally starts in the canton of Glarus before the cantonal conciliation authority (Kantonale Schlichtungsbehörde Glarus). It tries to bring the parties to an agreement. If that fails, the case can go to the cantonal court (Kantonsgericht Glarus). Time limits for challenging a notice or a rent are short, so a tenancy lawyer reviews your documents and helps with the application.

Work
The canton of Glarus has a single court of first instance: the cantonal court (Kantonsgericht Glarus) also hears employment disputes – dismissal, unpaid wages, overtime or a work certificate. There is no separate employment tribunal. To claim that a dismissal is abusive, you must object in writing while the notice period is still running. A practitioner checks the deadlines and evidence first.

Family
Protective measures, separation, divorce, custody and maintenance are decided at first instance by the cantonal court (Kantonsgericht Glarus), whether you live in Glarus, Glarus Nord or Glarus Süd. Often an agreement can be reached that the court then only has to approve. A first consultation, also by video, clarifies your rights, the documents you need and the best route.

Serves: the whole canton

Criminal
A complaint, a summons to an interview or a penalty order: the investigation is led by the public prosecutor’s office (Staats- und Jugendanwaltschaft des Kantons Glarus), and for minors by the juvenile prosecutor. If charges are brought, the cantonal court decides at first instance. The time limit for objecting to a penalty order is very short, so seek advice from a criminal lawyer without delay.

Legal aid
If you cannot afford proceedings and your case is not without prospects, you can apply for legal aid. The application goes to the competent court, which at first instance is the cantonal court (Kantonsgericht Glarus). Legal aid can exempt you from advances and court costs and allow a lawyer to be appointed for you. A practitioner can tell you whether your situation qualifies.

At first instance, the cantonal court (Kantonsgericht Glarus) covers the whole canton, in civil, family and criminal matters as well as employment disputes. A tenancy dispute starts before the conciliation authority (Kantonale Schlichtungsbehörde Glarus), criminal investigations are led by the public prosecutor’s office, and administrative appeals go to the administrative court (Verwaltungsgericht des Kantons Glarus).
The Glarner Anwalts- und Notarenverband is the professional association of lawyers and notaries in Glarus. Membership is not the same as being entered in the cantonal bar register, which is what allows a lawyer to represent clients in court. That register entry is what ora. checks before publishing a lawyer’s profile.
Each practitioner sets their own fees, and the rates of the lawyers available are shown live on this page and on every profile before you book. ora.’s service fee appears on a separate line and is never added into the fee, and you pay the practitioner directly. If your means are insufficient, you can apply to the competent court for legal aid.
