Before you consult, it helps to know who decides. Here are the competent authorities for the whole canton and the districts they serve, each with its official website.
Tenancy
In Valais, a dispute between tenant and landlord normally starts before the Commission cantonale de conciliation en matière de bail à loyer (cantonal tenancy conciliation board), which covers the whole canton, from the Chablais to Goms. It hears both parties and looks for an agreement on the rent, defects or termination. If conciliation fails, it issues an authorisation to proceed and the case can go to court. A landlord and tenant lawyer helps you meet time limits that are often short.

Work
Disputes under an employment contract go to the Tribunal du travail / Arbeitsgericht, a cantonal court that sits in Sion for French-speaking Valais and in Visp for German-speaking Upper Valais. Contested dismissal, unpaid wages, overtime, seasonal work or a work certificate: before you act, an employment lawyer checks your documents, puts a figure on your claims and checks any time limits already running.

Family
Valais has nine district courts, three German-speaking ones in Upper Valais and six French-speaking ones in the rest of the canton. Separation, divorce, custody or maintenance go to the court for your area, such as the Tribunal du district de Sion (Sion district court) or the Tribunal du district de Monthey (Monthey district court). A family lawyer reviews your options and whether an agreement is possible before any proceedings begin.

Criminal
A criminal complaint, a summons for questioning or a penalty order: the investigation is led by the Ministère public / Staatsanwaltschaft (public prosecutor) of the canton of Valais, which works through a central office and regional offices. It may drop the case, issue a penalty order or send it to trial. The time limit to object to a penalty order is very short, so whether you are accused or a victim, see a criminal lawyer without delay.

Each practitioner sets their own fees and shows them on their profile before you book. You pay ora., which collects on the practitioner’s behalf; ora. charges its service fee on a separate line.

We keep the name of the register and the date of every check.
Local answers, checked against official sources. A practitioner can look at your situation in detail.
See all questionsValais has two official languages. The district courts of Brig, Visp and Leuk work in German, the other six in French, and the Tribunal du travail / Arbeitsgericht (employment tribunal) sits in both Sion and Visp. The language of proceedings therefore generally follows the region. Every profile on ora. lists the practitioner’s languages, so you can find a lawyer who works in French, German or both.
It depends on the district. Sion, Sierre, Monthey and Entremont each have their own court; Hérens and Conthey share one, as do Martigny and Saint-Maurice. In Upper Valais, Visp has its own court, Brig shares one with Goms and eastern Raron, and Leuk with western Raron. Your lawyer tells you which court is competent based on where you live or where the dispute arose.
A decision by a cantonal or municipal authority is challenged within the time limit stated at the end of the decision. Depending on the field, an objection or an appeal to the cantonal government may be needed before going to court; at cantonal court level, the Cour de droit public du Tribunal cantonal (public law division of the cantonal court) decides. An administrative lawyer tells you which route applies.
The Ordre des avocats valaisans / Walliser Anwaltsverband is the professional association of lawyers in the canton. Membership is separate from registration in the cantonal register of lawyers, which allows a lawyer to represent clients in court. ora. checks that registration before a lawyer’s profile is published; legal advisers, who hold a Swiss law degree, are shown as such.
Each practitioner sets their own fees, and the rates of lawyers available in the canton of Valais are shown live on this page and on every profile before you book. ora.’s service fee appears on a separate line and is never added into the fee, and you pay the practitioner directly. If your means are limited, the legal aid application goes to the court hearing the case.
